In process

      I took the assignment for this project very literally. I wanted to make something that was very structural that would be a part of me and would do something to me. I chose to make what I've been calling the lipstick machine. The piece with the lipstick slides back and forth to apply lipstick to the person wearing the machine. the most difficult part was making the moving parts. I don't see this as art, I see it as more of an invention. 

Memento

       My memento was about breaking up with my girlfriend when she moved to New York. The two sticks represent me and her, and the string is our relationship or connection. The idea is that if the two sticks were closer together, there would be no tension on the string. But, because of the distance, there is a lot of tension on the string which allows it to be cut by the razor blade. The three materials used were wood, string, and metal.

      The finished product of this project showed more post-modern influence than southwestern or Gothic. I wanted it to be fairly clean and angular. there are no soft corners or curving lines except for in the recess on the left side, in which the curves are made of ink. I could have left the structure on the right off of it and have been very happy with the piece, but I hadn't used all of the materials as required so I had to add it on.

      The piece in this video that stuck out most to me was "Moor". I liked the way she cataloged every piece of material that went in and who it was associated with. I also thought it was interesting how she eventually made rope out of raw hemp. I think that people who make fun of modern art for being so simple should watch this video. Like, the people who would say, "I don't get it. It's a rope. How is that art?" should watch this. I like that she backs up everything that she made with really valid points. I'm glad she explained everything because I would not have been able to get anything out of her art otherwise.

Soap Mount

     I didn't get a chance to take professional pictures of the final product, so this is all I have. When I was creating the base for the final product, I wanted it to be very simple, and geometric. I didn't want it to be intimate, personal, or comfortable at all. This is why I ultimately chose a corner with a nail coming out of the top. I wanted the piece to be almost completely in gray-scale. The only bits of color are the purple on the soap and the natural wood grain.

Project 2

Step one: I soaked the fox carving in ink. - additive





Step two: I crushed the carving with a fork - subtractive





Step three - I wrapped up the pieces and squeezed them back together - additive





Step four  - I left them in the saran wrap in the freezer for an hour. Some of the soap was lost in the process. - subtractive





Step five  - Straight out of freezer, into a plastic bag, and boiled briefly. I lost more of the soap in this process. - suntractive





Step six - I attempted to chop up the lump of soap with out it crumbling - subtractive

Step seven - I wrapped the chunks back up in saran wrap and stepped on them to both make them stick together again and to give them texture.

Step eight - I combined all of the chunks once the stepped on piece fell apart by sewing them together.

On Touch

The Hand

       I created this image in response to the section, "The Hand". I think it was really intresting when she talked about how much information our hands can produce or contain. she mostly talked about the information they contain, like in hidden meaning in the creases of a palm, but this photo is about the information they produce. The key board allows hands to speak completely independently of a mouth, which i find very interesting.

Hair

      This image is clearly about the "Hair" section. I thought it was really interesting when the author talked about how hair defines who you are. My hair doesn't necessarily fit into one style, so what does that say about me? Does it mean that I am some completely original, unique being? Or is my haircut actually a style I just didn't know about and I have a false sense of individuality? It's actually neither of them, I'm just trying to grow my hair out, but this passage really spoke to me. 

This is a pair of Faded Glory's I made out of masking tape. As seen in the in process pictures, I took apart the original shoe so I could trace the panels. I traced the originals onto two-ply sheets of masking tape i had already prepared. the most time consuming but also rewarding part was the sole. I am pretty happy with how they turned out.
